We often declutter our closets, getting rid of clothing that “doesn’t spark joy” as we’ve learnt from Marie Kondo. But, most often, we tend to overlook our lingerie closet and it’s about time you did so. If you find yourself saving that g-string from college for one of those days when you’re going to wear a figure-hugging dress or that push up bra which you have had forever, it’s time for a change. Here’s how to identify when to throw out your lingerie.1. When they have lost shapeWe’ve all done this at some point or the other, thrown our underwire bras into the washing machine, only to retrieve them post-wash all bent and out of shape. Wearing a bra that’s not form-fitting could cause issues such as the straps cutting into your skin or causing your boobs to sag. The same goes for shapewear. Don’t want this to happen? Pick a special pouch that protects your bras from the harsh spin cycle. Or hand wash your bras at the sink to increase their longevity. 2. When they have become smaller or larger for youOur clothes tend to shrink over time, especially if they’re cotton. If your underwear has become slightly smaller, it will be a tighter fit which can cause rashes. If you experience fluctuating weight loss and have dropped some kilos, chances are that your bra size has changed too. Your regular, everyday bra is now a lot larger. Get a fitting done with a lingerie consultant so that your clothes look good.3. There are holes or rips in themThis one is not rocket science. If you have rips or ladders in your stockings, toss them. The same goes for underwear. Trust us, you will find comfier underwear.4. They have lost all elasticityYour underwear will eventually lose the elasticity in its waistband. This will cause it to be loose and potentially fall off your hips, and we don’t want that to happen now, do we? A bra, too, can become loose around the band (the area under the cups) and the straps can lose their tension, which leaves you with the annoying job of pushing your straps up every two minutes. 5. They’re uncomfyOften find yourself getting a wedgie with certain underwear? Or are your sexy lace panties suddenly super itchy? The solution: toss them. If you find that your bra is leaving marks on your back or rib cage, it means that it is too small for you. Your lingerie should be comfortable and feel like you’re wearing virtually nothing under your dress or sari.
